Motel 58

There’s a fairly new poetry magazine out that you might like to have a look at, Motel 58.  It is a simple publication, containing good poetry.

You’ll also find submission information on the linked page.  Stop in and have a look, and send your work in while you are at it!

Free Resource for Poets and Writers

I don’t know if you’ve heard of duotrope yet, but it is about as good as a free site could possibly be.  There is loads of information there for the writer or poet.  It is usually very up to date.  It has helped me eliminate some markets I was considering when I found that they had a more recent update saying that this or that market was closed to submissions (and some closed down altogether).

The best way to figure out how to use duotrope is to just go and do it.  It is not hard, and you’ll find very valuable information there.  Use the box below to check it out.

Have You Checked it Out Yet? Well, what are you waiting for….?

Have you been over to have a look at the new online literary magazine Sloth Jockey yet?  Some of the writing that is coming together there is really top-notch.  I am enjoying it all.  If you haven’t visited yet, what are you waiting for?

Also, make sure and check out the submission guidelines.  They are always open for more good work at Sloth Jockey, so do send your things over for consideration.

Sated

Has this ever happened to you?

Recently I’ve been doing a lot of reading, and have come across some very good books.  I always read a lot, so that part isn’t too out-of-the-ordinary.  It is the fact that nearly everything I’ve read lately has been really good.  Things by Kurt Vonnegut, Markus Zusak, and Richard Kearney have really stood out, but there has been a lot of other good material too.

It has left me feeling a bit like I do a the end of a meal when the family gets together for a holiday — sated.  I am full to the brim.  And worse, I am lethargic.  When I sat down to write yesterday, not a word could come out of my pen.  Instead, I sat sketching little line drawings of dragons, old men, and other strange creatures.  Thing is, I can’t draw, and seldom ever do.  My mind is just so full of ideas and words, though, that I am not able to do anything else.

A Student Who is a Poet

In my teaching duties, I take strictly literature courses.  There is not a creative writing department at my university (nor at any university in the area), so I have never gotten to teach a creative writing course to undergraduate students before.  Most of my students are probably not even aware that I am a poet, and only a few have approached me to talk about their own writing.  This past week, though, one of my students sent me his poetry, only the second to ever do so.  I am pleased that he has chose to do this, and hope it leads to a good dialogue with him.

Anthology Builder

I talked in a previous post about Anthology Builder.  I just received my first anthology from them, even quicker than was promised.  I wrote more about it on my main blog, if you’d like to read.

I have thicker skin than I thought

Wow, I have thicker skin than I realized.

About 10 days ago, I had been commenting in my journal that there were several magazines that have not yet replied to my submissions, and that the time to start hearing responses was probably at hand.  Since then, I got three responses, all rejections.  Funny how that works out.
Today as I was writing in my journal, I commented that it is alright — I prefer timely responses, even if the news I hear isn’t what I would have preferred.
I didn’t realize I’d grown so thick-skinned!
