June Cotner's Call

June Cotner is looking for submissions for several poetry anthologies.

Earth Blessings has a deadline that is a bit tight now (April 30), but there are others coming up too:

Parents' Blessings
Birthday Blessings
365 Blessings
Everyday Inspirations
Family Traditions
Girls' Night Out
What is Love? (seeking submissions from kids)

All of these have open submission dates.
The poetry sought here is pretty much inspirational poems, fitting into the various themes listed.  You can visit the link for more details on what Cotner is looking for with each volume.

The pay per poem is not bad, so this is a market you might like to check out, even if it is not the sort of place you most often submit.

Remember to read the guidelines carefully!

Best New Poets

Do you have a book length poetry collection published?  If not, this is something you might be interested in.

Best New Poets is an annual anthology of emerging poets, and it is accepting entries April 15 to June 5 in its Open Competition for the 2008 competition.

There is a reading fee of $3.50.  All entries into the Open Competition that are selected for publication receive $50.

Only poets who have yet to publish a book-length collection may enter this contest.  It is a good chance to get your collection published.

More good news

I received more good news yesterday, this time from The Shantytown Anomaly.  My poem "Robotics" will appear in the magazine, in issue #8.

I am looking forward to seeing my work there.  I've had a chance to read several issues of The Shantytown Anomaly and really like the poetry I've encountered there.  It's nice to hear that they want to use one of my poems too.

What you write

I'm currently in Shanghai taking intensive Chinese language lessons, and much of my work there involves writing essays for class.

For some time now, I have been intending to start writing literary essays (in English!) and submitting them for publication.  Somehow, it has eluded me, and I have always found myself writing poetry instead.  But since I have started taking my class, that has changed.  Somehow, the writing of essays seems to just be in my brain now, and it seems to have carried over from Chinese class into my creative writing space.

I think it is about organization.  An essay is organized very differently than a poem.  I think that putting my brain into gear for essays for class has made it so that I just see things that way at the moment.

What you write, when it comes down to it, depends on how you see the things around you.  For me, for now, I am seeing things as essays.  And that's a new adventure for me in my writing.
