Ongoing contests

I like to list a lot of writing contests around here.  This isn't for a specific contest with an upcoming deadline.  Rather, here is a site that has ongoing contests listed all the time.  Take a look and see what you can find to suit you.

There are some updates there, so do keep checking back from time to time.

iCalvyn

Calvyn and I have agreed to exchange reviews of one another's blogs via the service offered by ReviewBack.  It's a great place to get to meet other bloggers.

iCalvyn is giving away a free domain to any blogger who reviews his blog.  It's a great deal, if you ask me.  Visit his site and have a look at the excellent offer from Calvyn.  He's an IT officer, and knows what he's doing with his blog.  I think you'll find lots of good tips around there.

The Turkish Store

If you are into ethnic goods, you should visit the Turkish Shop, an online store dedicated to Turkish goods.  It is located in New York, and has free shipping within the continental United States for purchases over $75.  They are a well-known brand name for Turkish goods, and are often featured in Turkish newspapers and media.  About 95% of their customers are Americans who look for Turkish and ethinc products.

I love the ease of shopping online, and how it creates the opportunity to find things that are otherwise unavailable in my area.  One of the killers can often be shipping, which can hike up the price of items purchased very quickly.  I think the free shipping on purchases over $75 is a real perk at Turkish Corner.  If you've ordered much online, you know just how valuable this service is.

Stop in and have a look around at the shop.  You'll be very impressed by the wide selection, and the service is as good as it gets.

Another Rejection

Rejection letters don't hurt anymore.  I suppose that means I've gotten used to them.

But it is nice to receive those that take careful care to be polite.  I got one from American Tanka today.  Not only did it go through the polite form rejection (a variation on "Not to say it's bad, you know, but just not what we need at the moment"), but they apologized twice for taking so long to reply.  It was 5 months, which is longer than what they usually take, but still not especially long in the industry overall.

It is nice when the rejection letters show a little extra effort at courtesy, isn't it?

Air Miles Cards

There are so many Air Miles Credit Cards to choose from.  I have had good experiences using mine in the past.  Bu, I do know that not all credit cards are the same, not even all of those offered by airlines.  For some, the fees are so high that it is not worth it to use them at all.

So how do you decide which is best for you?  Well, you can go to Credit Card Search Engine and look at the features of each different credit card, laid out for you side by side.  That's a really cool feature that you will find at the site, making the decision process that much easier for you.

All the major credit cards are listed, so do take a look and do some comparison shopping before you sign up for a card.

Call for Poetry Manuscripts

Watch for the St. Lawrence Book Award, which has a deadline of August 31.  Anyone who has not yet published a book length collection of short stories or poems is welcome to enter.  There is a $1000 cash prize, along with some other perks.

There is a $25 entry fee for the contest.

Writer's Digest

Let's not forget that Writer's Digest always has lots of contests.  There are three assignments for contests in August (one for kids), and that always means lots of fun.

Stop in at the Writer's Digest site and have a look at the upcoming contests.  It's always worth a shot to submit something with them.

And Finally...

With all this talk about Florida, I can't leave out one of the most important things you need to think about before you head that direction.

Tickets.

You've got to get tickets to all of the attractions.  The good news is that I know where you can get cheap Universal Studios tickets, cheap Disney World tickets, cheap Sea World tickets, cheap... well, you get the idea.

The secret is to visit Orlandofuntickets.com.  They have tickets to everyplace Orlando.  And, best of all, they have them at great prices.  You can save a real bundle when you get your tickets from Orlandofuntickets.com.

And hey, who minds saving a real bundle?

Sticking With a Theme

Since Florida seems to be the theme of the moment around here, let me introduce you to some poetry resources from Florida:

The Florida Review (both prose and poetry, a literary magazine)

That isn't an exhaustive list, by any means, but there should be enough there to keep you busy for a while.

Enjoy a literary look at Florida.

What Else You Might Need

While we're talking about that trip to Orlando, here's some other things you might consider.

You'll need to be able to find your way around Orlando, right?  So make sure and pick up some good Florida maps before you go.

And, while you might think you'd never need one, it's always a good idea to have a travel guide handy before you make your journey.
